Pilots Who Got The Most "Action"

I'm not sure how well received this thread will be, but here it is...

Are there any opinions as to which Great War fliers got... um... the most action with the ladies? Who were the acknowledged playboys of that war? Some of the memoirs I've read certainly hint at sexual liaisons, but of course decorum would dictate these mentions be rather vague.

In comparison to most G.W. flier's accounts, the writings of Elliott Springs are almost bawdy. I recently reread Victor Yeates and he got "action" three or four times in the course of his semi-autobiographical novel. I get the impression that a bunch of British kids didn't lose their virginity until they got to France. Does this seem reasonable?

I strongly suspect that Manfred Von Richthofen died a virgin; rumors of a "secret" girlfriend notwithstanding. How about Lother, the "life of the party"? Can anyone confirm that, unlike his famous older brother, he was a playboy? And Mannock, with the young French girl he visited... do we know if they hooked up? And finally, a last question: were there and known illegitimate children born to any of the famous aces?

Any opinions who got the most action?

I've often wondered this myself. My opinion only would be that Lothar v Richthofen, Ernst Udet, and Charles Nungesser scored with regularity.

If you read Bill Lambert's books, you'd believe it was him. Check out the appropriately titled "Barnstorming and Girls" about post-war flying and ...

Not sure about Ernst Udet Because he had a fiancee throughout the war?

I wish I could remember who gave the presentation at a WW I symposium years (and years) ago, but he said that Guynemer's 1000-meter stare had less to do with combat fatigue than with an abundance of feminine attention. Apparently his frail appearance sparked the maternal instinct in many femmes, and the lad could absord a whole lotta "mothering"...

Other than that, concur that Nungesser had a Real Good Time.

Ed Parsons wrote that a favored amulet in the Escadrille was a garter removed from the leg of a virgin in the dark of the moon...

EVR reputedly had an ambition of being shot for rape at 90. The mother of a distant relative of mine tended EVR during his mastoid recovery in Paris and said she never met a more obnoxious individual. My cuz, who's a serious attack type aviator, said, "He was a fighter pilot. What do you expect?"

I think its a fair subject. It speaks to several socio-historical questions. Was there opportunity? If they had steady girlfriends, like Udet, did it mean what it means today? Were they willing to pay for it? Or were they upright examples of post Victorian era repression? If they became well known public figures, like Guynemer, Nungesser, or even Albert Ball, did women seek them out? As would be the case today.

I tend to think they were 22 year olds engaged in the second best game ever invented. When they got back to base, ate dinner, started to relax and had a few beers, they probably started thinking about game number one.

Its only 90 years ago folks.
