"Jasta" question

Hi chaps,

I was watching a programme on the TV the other day, "Who killed Richtofen" and in it there was a suggestion that larger squadrons of aircraft were deployed after 1916 - and that these were called "Jasta's". I was under the impression that Jasta was the German name for "Squadron" and that this was a standard name used throughout the war. The programme led me to believe that Jasta was specifically the name for a large group of aircraft. Can anyone confirm this - or tell me what German squadrons were called prior to this?

I don't think I've worded that question very well, so apologies in advance. Thanks in advance also..!

When WWI started, all Flying was organized in FFA's, Feldfliegerabteilungen. The first fighters where singulary attached to these Abteilungen. With the beginning of 1916, the first fighter units where installed with the founding of the in KEK's, the Kampfeinsitzerkommando ( Single seater fighting unit). In the autumn of 1916 these KEK's where united in Jasta's ( Jagdstaffel). In the summer of 1917 several Jasta's where brought together in Jagdgeschwader ( JG or Jage), which holds usually four Jasta's.
