British Compass

Can anyone identify the compass in the attached image please?

It is believed to have come from a Curtiss H.12 (or possibly a Felixstowe F.3) flying-boat of the Royal Naval Air Service / Royal Air Force.

It measures about 6 inches / 15 centimetres in diameter and has the inscriptions " PATT 200 " and " No.450 " on the outer rim. Presumably this means that it is of pattern design 200 and 450 is its serial number??

Any information on the type and its maker would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Purser

Are there any military markings on it? Military aircraft instruments typically are thoroughly marked with military markings. For a start, British instruments should be marked with the broadarrow in addition to other markings.

No other marks that I could see, other than " PATT 200 " and " No.450 " on the outer rim on the top of the compass.

There may be markings underneath, but as the compass was firmly mounted on a hardwood base I was reluctant to take out my toolkit and start unscrewing things!

There's a good picture of the compass in an H.12 in the Datafile 125 on page 32 (and a very similar/identical compass in the picture on page 34 of the F.2A Datafile).
