What might a "KB" be?

I am in the process of transcribing my wife's great uncle's flight log (he was a gunlayer/observer with the RNAS and RAF in 1918) and although I can interpret most of his shorthand (including "EAs" and "flaming onions"), the "KB" that he strafed from his DH4 "over our old drome at Mons" has me beat - any ideas anyone?

Reckon that'd be "Kite Balloon".

Yes, KB = Kite Balloon. These were used by both sides to observe activites behind the enemy lines as well as directing their own artillery fire. It is not at all surprising that your wife's great uncle took a shot at one as they were a pain in the neck to both sides. Hope this gives a little better appreciation of what they did. R.
