Russ,
Very interesting document. I find notable that the second group of tasks, ground stafing and dropping supplies, were considered doable only after air superiority had been gained. I'm sure they were performed during desperate times as a priority, but the point remains that the British considered control of the air over the battle front of utmost importance. This tactical concept explains and justifies the British constant aggressiveness.

StevI'm in a rush but here is last part:

'... In order to couteract these tactics and compel the enemy to accept battle in a locality and at a time of our own choosing it may be advisable to carry out organised raids against hostile aerodromes and repeat such raids at fixed intervals during the day. Such raids should be carried out by mixed forces consisting of low flying scout machines and bombers protected by high flying scouts. A definate objective should be assigned to each raid.

By these tactics it may be possible to force the enemy machines into the air where the could be engaged by superior forces. If, however, the enemy refuse battle in the air, considerable damage both material and moral will be inflicted. To be successful a close study of the enemy's habits is essential.'

Though not dated it must have been drawn uo early July 18 - prior to the airfield attack offensive.

Cheers Russ

Russ,

Thank you for your recent posts--they are highly informative. The
RAF strategy for the last 6 months of the war emerges with clarity
from the material you quoted--both the characteristics of the
overall strategy (I hadn't realized there WAS one!) and hints of
the strategic choices that required decisions and implementation.
With Steven, I appreciate your taking the time to document and
explain such essential parts of the historical record.

Regards

Josquin
