Willi's tips on getting the WWI aviator look

Here are my tips on looking like a WWI aviator and links to sites where you can get accurate looking clothing and gear!

1.Scarfs:We all know the white silk scarfs that are a typical Hollywood depiction of an aviator.Such scarfs are very easy to find and can be found in countless sites!Though pilots normaly tucked in the scarf (instead of letting it "fly out") to prevent irritation of the neck.Pilots would also buy more thicker scarfs privatly or mailed to them by loved ones.Thats about it with the scarfs

2.Flight helmets:Helmets came in different styles, materials, and sizes and were pretty much (unless your Albert Ball) a must in order to keep your head warm.Heres some links of some accurate looking helmets.
If your in the German style, this helmet would do fine!

Leather Aviator Cap - Brown

I bought this one last winter and its very confortable! It kept my head and neck very warm and it help prevent cold air from getting in my shirt.Though the one I got had a velcro strap but that would be an easy fix.

This page has some good helmets and goggles.

3.Goggles:Just like flight helmets, goggles came in various styles.Heres some sites with accurate looking goggles (also check the above link)

FastCycleParts.com - Biker's Choice Phantom Aviator Goggles

4.Jacket:Whats a WWI aviator without one! Here are some sites that have some good jackets!

German WW1

Schott, Double Breasted Military Leather Jacket - Style # 650 - Double breasted military cowhide jacket with metal star buttons and wool twill lining. - Made in the USA.

There is much better stuff elsewhere, especially boots wise.

RFC wise there's a company called Pegasus Militaria in the UK who do the best maternity jackets and 'ordinary' trousers, Officers tunics can be converted from more modern ones, and goggles/leather coats/gloves/flying helmets are still available at reasonably prices. I'm also currently gathering together a number of people and organisations to get a batch of authentic Sidcot suits made up which will be perfect replicas
