RFC Other Ranks Greatcoat

Thought this might be of interest - reproduction Royal Flying Corps 1914 pattern OR Greatcoat, very comfortable and compared to the original it's spot on! Couldn't find my Cant hat so it was my 2009 hairstyle for this photo

" Think I'll get one of those things Murial"...." I shouldn't Bertie , ..You're close enough to your wings already ! "

Regards John

That's really nice. I made one for myself but just modified a Belgium overcoat, but the pockets flaps are slightly slanted. Other then that it's pretty close as I contacted Andrew Cormack (author of BRITISH AIR FORCES I & II) of the Royal Air Force Museum for the correct measurement of the epaulets and sleeve 'flaps', and other details.

It looks like yours buttons down the center.

I would be interested in the contact info for the person that made yours.

Hi Steve, PM on its way - it doesn't button down the centre, but to the side as it should, being double breasted, but not as far over as a maternity jacket.

Cheers, Rob

Hi Rob,

I thought you might like these great coats for a comparison to your really Great Coat.

Yours is wool, isn't it?

I have an old Buckskin coat (Elk) with a wollen blanket liner. People ask if it's warm and some ask if it's too warm, depending on the weather. I tell them yes that it is warm and no that it isn't too warm, that natural materials like a properly tanned hide and wool breathe. That makes all of the difference.

Best Wishes, Jay

Hi Jay, interesting photo - haven't seen a (presumably) flight coat like that used before, but my main interest and research is Royal Flying Corps instead of RNAS.

Yep, mine's good old wool - haven't worn it since the photograph was taken but should be using it at an event at the end of October, which is partly outside, and may take it with me on a march from Mons in November at night time, so will try out it's qualities then!

Hi Rob,

Speaking from 25 years of useage of my Elk-Skin coat, you should be pleasantly surprised with the qualities of your woolen Great Coat.

My coat was White when it was new, it has a very nice aged color to it from years of use and a few campfires. It does look smoked, which is desirable for Buckskins and helps to weatherproof them.

It is said that the fringe on the sleeves directs rainwater off of your arms.

Cheers, Jay

P.S. I did notice a difference between your coat and the two in the fotograf, but didn't realise that it was Royal Flying Corps instead of RNAS.
Thanks for the information.
