The part that makes me feel like I was there was when Cecil and a couple of other pals' lorry fouled up during a rain shower.I can imagine the scene,Cecil and another friend, sitting in the lorry, quiet, staring at the windshield in impatience, the rain drizziling on the canvas top.It truely brought the scene to life in my head.
I also like the part when they were at home defence, the squadron was half sober and very energetic, decide to get into their machine to play follow the leader. The bit where that one fellow flew his Camel with all sorts of tricks and flying over an officer.

Excuse my faulty memory, but is "Sagittarius" the book where the author describes an anthelion?

anthelion!
Yes, indeed, Dave, that's it.
The circular rainbow enclosed the shadow/silhouette of his aircraft against a cloud bank. Some time after reading that, I was travelling in an airliner and I looked out and saw precisely the same effect on adjacent clouds. It was extraordinary.
I also looked for a few SE5a's prancing around the sky as well, and saw them...in my mind's eye!

Hi Marc---the book rises to almost poetry sometimes, and warms the heart-----that, and 'Winged Victory' have been my (and many others) close companions for more years than I like to disclose----never forgetting the 'Iliad' mind you
Cheers,
Dave.
