Hi Terry,
That's O.K. Terry--he was just in such a rush to get it said---he forgot who said it! Could have made him look silly, that --but it's corrected now--I see.
Dave.

Terry,
nothing to educate, but a lot to inform. WWI started as a continental war, but that was not enough for Great Britain. And please don't try to play the Belgium card. You know, and I know, Great Britain would have marched into this country 'for protection', and then to cross the border to invade Germany.

I don't want to put you under any pressure Manfred but I was hoping for a little more information to support your belief. This doesn't inform me of anything other than your opinion. Please don't assume what I know either.
Cheers Terry

As the originator of this thread, I am disturbed at the the turn it has taken. What was meant to remember those who have honorably served their countries, has turned into something far different. Apparently, we clearly have not learned any lessons from the War to End All Wars.

Cameldriver,
I appreciate your gesture and I think that at the end of the day, the 11th Nov was well and fittingly observed.
Liberal democracy is a messy thing, but I am glad that people are exercising their rights, though I understand your sentiment that a time for reflection should be precisely that: a time for REFLECTION.
Anyway, I think Dave's (Bristol Scout's) reference to Liebensraum was charming and I am thinking of having a T-shirt made:
"Liebensraum statt Lebensraum!" (statt=instead of)

Hi marc,
Whilst I know you mean no sarcasm at all my friend I was suitably chastened by the (not terribly unreasonable mis-spelling of a German word some might think) allusion to looking silly that I searched around a bit on random threads checking spelling mistakes in general---and foreign words in particular--and if such errors are any criterion of looking silly--then there are an awful lot of silly people on this forum.
I found that I also mis-spelt it in that--sometimes very robust discussion we also took part in about monks---yet managed to get 'Schrecklichkeit' right ---yet Catfish ( with whom I was in debate with at that moment) chose to ignore the error and concentrate on the argument---and as I have only ever seen ONE criticism of spelling here-(apart from mine)--the one I mentioned, I assume that is the 'norm'
Perhaps the 'critique' was more aimed at diminishing the person rather than the argument he was putting forth----a growing trend I feel, but a dangerous one as this old dog will always bite back if barked at.
Dave.

spelling
You are right, there was no sarcasm (or offense) intended. These forum discussions have the quality (and speed) of chatlines and therefore misspellings are common since it is not worth proof-reading everything! And the German terms are often long (I like Mark Twain's essay on German -- e.g. Donauschifffahrtsgesellschaftuniform...etc.) marc
p.s. I still like the term Liebensraum, because it contains the opposite idea of aggressive expansion. Make love, not war!

Not a misspelling: "Liebestraum" by Franz Liszt.

You mean Franz Liszt...
Sorry, I live "next door" to Hungary and I still get my "sz" and "zs" mixed up!
But that is beautiful music, Manfred. Thanks.

marc,
thank you for correction. I was so concentrated not to misspell "Liebestraum", that Murphy's law took place. The soundtrack suffers from all, best to hear with headphones.

"Hello, Hello" (From a song by SOPWITH CAMEL!),
Thank you Camel Driver for a thoughtful thread.
Armistice Day was recognised and celebrated by many.
The following is from the 11-11-'09 BCFC #504:

We definitely seem to have many different ways in commemorating this occasion and I applaud your attempt at sharing your Well Wishes with all.
Thanks again, Jay
P.S. I knew that I forgot something:
