La Brayelle Douai - Exact location !

Gentlemen,

This is the very exact location of the La Brayelle aerodrome near Douai.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net...66986143_n.jpg

You will see that this is a bit different from what's already been posted (more to the right now).
It is based on an actual aerial photo of the airfield.

Enjoy !

And...? Please share your methodology of how you came to this conclusion. Profuse apologies if this has already been covered.

It's already discussed here in the past. The road at the right end of the aerodrome existed at the time, the others to the left of this road didn't.
As did the little wood at the underside of the photo exist already.
That way it was very easy to place the two over one another. I'm sorry if I'm not going to publish the original aerial photo, but I would like to use it for my book on the KEK's.

What a coincidence! Just yesterday I sat and matched a plan of the 1909 Douai/La Brayelle air race meeting site with Google Maps and arrived at exactly the same spot! The name of the road on the north-east was "Chemin des Vaches" in 1909, now "Voie des Vaches". There was a "champ de tir" (shooting range) along the north-west edge of the field, which fits with the current name of the northern part of the road. The crossing with the main road to Douai at the north corner also fits.

Imagine the historic airfield covered by an Aldi-Marché, a logistics company and a big Renault car factory...

Today I saw this photo http://i307.photobucket.com/albums/n...Herbst1916.jpg . When comparing that photo with the map sketch of the 1909 airfield there can be absolutely no doubt that they show the same field. In the 1909 sketch you can even identify the plots of land on the south-east edge of the field that you can see on the photo!

Anders,

You've got it completely right indeed ! Having seen a map, two aerial photographs of the airfield, there is no possible doubt about it indeed.

Bonjour

I assume you are talking about the plan of the airfield when it was used by Breguet-Richier for testing its devices (field created as soon as 1909)

Bonsoir Bruno,

Exactly, that is the one I mean from my side. Don't know if Anders has seen something different ?

Cordialement,

If you check this article http://www.ipmsairrace.org/100douai.pdf you will see a map of the field in 1909.
