Just finished reading September Evening. Fine book well worth the read. Unless I misunderstood, I think there is some confusion as to the participation of Jasta 8. Firstly, as far as I know, red was never a squadron marking of Jasta 8 at anytime during the war. I was always under the impression that in 1917 Jasta 8 flew factory finished machines demarcated by white tail assemblies with thin black "zebra" stripes. This would clearly eliminate Wendelmuth and Mettlich as there would be no green or red on the planes. I also seem to remember reading several accounts attributed to Wendelmuth who in observing the fight and too far away to help Voss (much like MvR and Holck) saw the crash and gave the exact same account as McCudden, "that upon hitting the ground the triplane disintegrated into a million pieces".

This would bring us back to Menckoff and unknown of Jasta 3. Maybe our markings experts her could chime in on what Jasta 3 was using at the time.
Also in thumbing thru new "Hat in the Ring" book it appears that Menckoff's son lives in Wash DC area and that his fathers papers and memiors are intact. I would have to imagine that Menckoff at some time would have had to have known that it was Voss in the Triplane and that he would have left his own account of the fight. Wouldn't that go a long way in clearing this up if in fact there is some mention of the fight. Just thinking out loud. All thoughts appreciated.

I THINK Charlie Woolley may be working on an article, book, etc. about the career of Carl Menckhoff. I am not 100% positive, obviously. If he is, the resulting study may answer your question. (A lot of 'if's' and 'maybe's' in that answer). R.
