My great Uncle Wallace Sinclair Earle was shot down in his BE2C craft over enemy lines on April 16th 1916 by Leutnant R Berthold-- his fifth kill. The location of the crash site was East of Maricourt and South of Maurepas. The Death Certificate issued by the International Red Cross stated his burial site as Combles near Peronne. Given that the territory was held by the Germans would he be in a marked grave?- what would the protocol have been ?- and what would likely have happened when the British regained the territory in September of 1916. Iwould appreciate any help you might be able to offer in locating his grave site. Thanks.

Good Day Sir,
I just did a search at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission
http://www.cwgc.org/cwgcinternet/search.aspx
It seems as though your Great Uncle Earle, sadly, does not have a known and honoured grave.

That is not uncommon amongst aviators, nor of course, for many soldiers of the Great War. It quite often happened that battlefield burials were lost in subsequent shelling/fighting. He is remembered on the Monument to the Missing at Arras, France. I've been there, it is well worth the trip. Vimy is a few kilometres north of there.
regards,
shredward

ps details about your uncle are at

According to Henshaws TSTB he was the 5th victory for Rudolf Berthold whilst he was with KEK Vaux.

Berthold ended the war with 44 victories but sadly was strangled with the ribbon of his Blue Max in 1920.

Regards,

Andrew.
