Hello,
I know that the first air-to-air kill was on October 5, 1914 when Joseph Frantz and his observer gunner Corporal Louis Quenault shot down an Aviatik in their Voisin. But does anyone know when and to who was the first kill accredited in a "single-seater vs single-seater" fight? e.g. morane vs eindecker Hirshman |

Well,Roland Garros thought of the idea using deflector blades for the propeller to fire the machine gun on his Morane Soulier and on 1st of April 1915 he shot down a German B II recon.-the ship was a two seater.
After Garros was captured as you know,Fokker saw his system and developed the synchronized machine-gun system mounted on the new Fokker Eindecker fighters..And the German aces began to fly and shoot down the Allied aircraft immadiately. I will search for that information of who scored the first single seat kill..The Allies or Central Powers?I do have the same question too VBR...TALLY HOO!!!

Also,the Brits had two seaters.

As far as I can see, the first victory in a single-seater v single-seater combat was on 14 December 1915 when Guynemer and Bucquet (Escadrille N3) claimed a Fokker Eindekker south-east of Noyon.
The first British claim appears to be that by Sgt T P H Bayetto of No 3 Sqn RFC on 5 January 1916. He is credited with having forced a Fokker to land near Douai. I'm not so sure about the first German claim but this might be the first of Immelmann's victories on 13 March 1916 when he shot down Maj Barrington-Kennet of No 4 Sqn (B-K was in Bristol 4678). The question was "who was the first pilot to claim a victory in a single-seater v single-seater combat?" His first single-seat victim that I can positively identify was Wilson's DH2 on 2 September 1916. Boelcke may well have been the first ace, but it don't mean he was the first to shoot down a single-seater. Graeme |
