Uffz Kandulski
Hi everyone,
I've seen references to a Unteroffizier Kandulski as being responsible for bringing down French ace Adolphe Pegoud on 31 August 1915, and also as having been Pegoud's former pupil.
Does anyone know anything more of this man ?
1. What his aviator certificate number/date was,
2. What happened to him after his victory on this date?
3. Any other info ?
Thanks in advance.
Matt.

I am also interested in information about this Walter Kandulski as I dont have the unit in which he served....?
I have that his observer was Oblt Julius Bielitz..
It seems that the Heeresbericht was late in reporting this victory as it is mentioned among the activities for 1 Sep 15. The reason is probably that the report from this Army sector did not catch the "breaking-time" which probably was around 18:00
Anyone who can identify the unit for these German flyers...?

Hello
maybe I found Walter Kandulski in the german military cemetery Azannes II.
In this cemetery is the grave from Unteroffizier Walter Kandulski, born in Magdeburg on 27. february 1895. But no date of dead.
Grave number: Block 2 Grab 627.
Is this the man?

His name does not appear in the von Eberhardt list, but it still could be the man. Too bad there is no date. R.

hello,
I'm interested about Walter Kandulski and have some (often conflicting) informations about him.
He was born in Königsberg ( or has been living there as a kid).
He was killed... two times in air fights: Once by the Frenchmen Ronserail (pilot) and Monteil (gunner) from the C.34 Squadron, "a few weeks after he shot down Pegoud" that mean late in the year 1915.the records of C.34 squadron have disappeared during W.W.2 : No traces of Roncerail and Monteil.
The second time by sergeant Robert L... (sic), pilote certificate nr.2054 issued the 14 june 1915, above Mulhouse (France) in the middle of May 1916.
Kandulski's observer, when fighting with Pegoud was first lieutnant von Blitz, or Pilitz.
He has flown on Albatros DIII
That's not much, I don't know anything more about his carreer in the german air-force
Pierre

Hello Pierre,
Kandulski was killed on 18 May 1916.
Ther is a victory listed in 'The Sky Their Battlefield' by Henshaw on this
date to Ronserail and his observer.
I put the question to the members of the great war forum.
Here is the thread.
1914-1918.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=21283
I also got an e-mail address for Kandulski's grandson from the guys at the
Unfortunate Region website, but it was invalid.
I did try another e-mail which went through, but (alas!) I have not received any replies.
Matt.

Hello,
Adjudant Paul RONSERAIL was born in PAU (France) on 04 April 1894 and was killed in a flying accident above MONT DE MARSAN on 26 February 1925. He was buried in Mont De Marsan old cemetery.
His surname after his victory versus Otto KANDULSKI was " Le vengeur de Pégoud " (PEGOUD's avenger).
Escadrille C.34 was create on 06 February 1915.
The symbol : a fox
used aircrafts :
- Caudron G3 : February 1915
- Caudron G4 and G6 : 1916
- SPAD XI : October 1917
- SPAD XVI : October 1917
- Letord : 1917
Only 2 victories for Escadrille C.34 during WW1.

Thanks Ludovic for the added information...
Some basic notes is that Kandulski "impossible" could have been the man who did shot down Pegoud as their a/c with more then 99% chance only had a machine-gun for the observer Oblt Bielitz...however he was piloting the a/c...
Do you happened to knew what the source is, which give Kandulskis first name as Otto...?
...and the possible source which confirms that Kandulski was brought in combat...?

Hello,
My sources are :
- " Les As français de la Grande Guerre " (french aces of the great war) de Daniel PORRET (published in 1983 by Service Historique de l'Armée de l'Air). In this book it's mentionned that KANDULSKI and BILITZ shot down PEGOUD. two days later, Those 2 men would have droped a wreath above the place where PEGOUD was fallen.
In this book, only the name KANDULSKI appears, not the first name.
- " Qui était qui ? mémorial de l'aéronautique, tome 2 " (Who was who ? aeronautic memorial, volume 2) de Marcel CATILLON (published in November 2004 by Nouvelles éditions latines). In this book, the author briefly talking about RONSERAIL, quotes the first name Otto concerning KANDULSKI.

I have got a short description (an article from a local paper of Berlin [Berliner Lokal-Anzeiger]) of the fight. Oberleutnant Julius Bielitz (observer) and Unteroffizier Walter Kandulski (pilot) were taking photographs in the Belfort-Region, wenn a French plane appeared - they exchanged bullets... and the French died. Though Bielitz did not mention the Kandulski-Pegoud-relation!
