Theophil Cipa, my great grandfather with pictures..

I will link to another thread that has many more pictures and info in it. If anyone can find information about him I would be in debt to you. I know one story that has been documented in one book about it. He was on a reconaisance mission and was shot down, eventually two spies/other prisoners were traded for his release.

Hallo Das Pferd

Interesting photos. I only have some minor information on him, like that he earned the pilot licence already long before the War on 23 Aug 12...

Do you happened to knew when he was brought down and captured...?

It seems that he went over to the Marine Air Force after he was released, and I have that he served within Landfliegerabteilung* as Vfw in the summer of 1917.
On 9 Jun 17 he received a Marine rank as he was "promoted" to Flugmeister, this might have been a disapointment for him as it meant that it was nearly impossible to become an officer...

*Landfliegerabteilung was the overall organisation for German Marine land flyers...

"Das Buch der deutschen Fluggeschichte" by Supf notes Cipa together with Steindorf, Jentsch und Lachmann among the best flying NCO (Unteroffiziere) in 1912. A very litte picture in the same book shows him together with the other first German Unteroffiziers-Flieger together with their flying teacher Brunnhuber.

In December 1912 Cipa was accidently crossing the French border during an
examination flight and landed near Marnay - I guess the French military was not very pleased about this and other cases of misnavigation of German pilots in this time.

Hi,

Great material, which I found particulary interesting because of the wonderfull photo's of his dress uniform ! I also liked his sword very much on the other web adress.
Do you still have his uniform or parts of it ?
Saw your grandfather was also in the navy and what you mentioned about tradition and commanders remaining in the Navy is very correct. Many great names can be found back, the most famous one of all is however Lutjens, who went down with the Bismarck but who was with the Flandern Flottille in WW I or the WW I and II destroyer man Bey who went down with the Scharnhorst.
Some went from the navy to other units such as Ramcke, Osterkamp,...

Best from Johan
