Erwin: what plane?

William Erwin scored eight victories as a two-seater pilot. His entry on this website says he flew DH4s. However, I have another source that says he flew the Salmson 2A2. Which is right?

Adrian

As far as I know, the 1st Squadron USAS was equipped with Salmsons.

Initially they had AR.1s and a few SPAD XIs based on photos I have seen. They reequipped with Samlson 2.A2s and did quite well on them!

From the information I have the 1st Observation Squadron flew SPAD XIs (two-seaters) in March, 1918 out of Ourches, and then went to Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutters, using them during the 2nd Battle of the Marne (Chateau Thierry Offensive, Francheville and Morass Farm; July 1918) and had switched over to Salmson 2A2s for the St. Mihiel Offensive (Sept 12-16, 1918) from Toul and the Meusse-Argonne Offensive (Sept 23) from Remicourt.

Thanks everyone, the consensus is clearly that my trusty Kenneth Munson book Bombers 1914-1919 which I've had since I was 14 was right: he did fly Salmsons
