My uncle transferred to the flying service in February 1917 and didn't see combat until late in the year, and he went for training at three different schools, so I would tend to believe that training was no joke. I also have his copy of his training guide, titled "Leitfaden fuer Flugschueler". It is hilarious in its' simplicity, yet it covers all the basics.

VtwinVince,

Could you post an example or two from the book?

I have several pals who are current or former flight instructors, and a couple of 'em have said they'd be interested in learning the extent of theory of flight as taught during TGW, from any/all nations. Undoubtedly it was rudimentary at the start, improving prob'ly from 1916 onward. Any sources?

No problem, Flieger, once I get my scanner back up and running. Probably the most interesting thing about the book is the advertising section at the back.

Barrett,

Perhaps you've already seen this but this, I believe, is an excellent RFC source from the period:

Practical Flying
