Paul Achilles

A note was posted on the 12 O'Clock High forum, asking for information on a list of Deutschen Kreuzes in Gold recipients, all Luftwaffe. One of the names is Oberst Paul Achilles, on Dec 15, 1941. His service unit is given as ObdL. Another poster noted the name, and suggested that this was most probably the World War I ace. Certainly the high rank, and the unusual name (for German) would imply that they are the same person.

Does anyone have any further information on this possibility? And does anyone have any information on his date and place of death?

Frank.

Frank, if all else fails you might try asking at the Wehrmacht Awards forum. They have an Imperial forum (which is where I occasionally muck around), but from the name, they MUST have a WW II forum. R.

Maybe he's a relation of the U-boat captain, Albrecht Achilles.

Do you have a birth-place for *that* Achilles?

Albrecht Achilles

According to his entry in uboat.net ( http://uboat.net/men/achilles.htm ) Albrecht Achilles was born on Jan 25, 1914 in Karlsruhe; died in U-161 on sept 27, 1943 off Bahia, Brazil.

Hmm... Karlsruhe is really the other side of the republic... The Achilles' here in Braunschweig-Watenbüttel (north of Germany) are farmers... I do not think that there is a big possibility, that they are/were relatives!

Hi together ...

Achilles didn´t receive the Deutsche Kreuz in Gold!
But he got the Frontflugspange für Aufklärer in Gold on 5.12.1941!!!
This info came from his P-File!
And 12 O´clock high??? Rubbish!!!
Achilles got his rank Oberst on 1.7.1941
His last active front-unit was 1./ Aufklärungsstaffel des Ob.d.L. (Oberbefehlshaber der Luftwaffe) as Staffelkapitän.
After that he served in several ground-units. For example in 1944 as Kommandant Fliegerhorst A (O) 26/ VII.
