On september 3 1917, Alfred Heurtaux was hit in a leg by 2 phosphorous rounds. He describes the pain as so intense that he could not keep consciousness. He somehow managed to crashland in british lines.
The surgeon told him that a bullet cuts his femoral artery but the phospore cauterized the wound whereas, with a ordinary bullet, he would died of hemorrhage within minutes. On another hand the wound was so severe that combat was over for Heurtaux.
