Attack to the Seeflugstation Zeebrugge

Today (20.03.2006) I was reading one of the rare mentions of WWI in German newspapers (NOZ historic news):
"A group of 65 british airplanes attacked 90 years ago the german Marineflieger-Station in Zeebrugge."
No mention in The Aerodrome - events.
What happened this day (20.03.1916)

Klaus

Hi Klaus,

This is what I have on the KTB See for that day : Morgens zwischen 4 und 5 Uhr greift ein feindliches Flugzeuggeschwader Zeebrugge an und wirft mehrere Bomben auf Mole und Hafen, kennenwerter Schaden wird nicht angerichtet, 2 Flugzeuge der Seeflugstation un Torpedoboot A12 werden leicht beschädigt, die Flugzeuge werden durch Scheinwerfer beluchtet und durch Batterien Wurttemberg un Kaiserin beschossen.

Later that day the unit (See Flandern) attacked some enemy destroyers on the North Sea.

Hope this helps a little.

Best from Johan

Thank you, Johan.
Two years later that was nearly a normal day.

Best regards, Klaus

Hi Klaus,

You're welcome ! As you mentioned almost a normal day two years later. Even so that it is almost not mentioned in the Tätigkeitsberichte in 1917/18....

Best from Johan

On 20/3/1916, Zeebrugge was attacked by 19 British (5th Wing RNAS), 19 French and 16 Belgian aircraft.

Regards,

Cnock

Does anyone know more on the involvement in this raid by a Short 184 no 8346 of HMS Vindex ?

One of the Belgian planes seems to have done a bombardment of the Houthave aerodrome dropping 3 bombs, and this plane, a Farman crewed by Rondeau-Rigaux was attacked by a Fokker killing Lt. Pierre Rigaux who was the gunner/observer and wounding 1st Sgt Raymond Rondeau. He landed his plane directly next to the Hospital l'Océan at De Panne. He probably crashed it as it was mentioned as destroyed by Belgian sources...
Rigaux was the very first Belgian casualty in an air to air battle...
They belonged to the 4th Escadrille.

Does anyone also know anything more concerning the French unit involved ?

Best from Johan
