Greco-Turkish War

Does anyone know of aerial claims made by pilots of either air service during this conflict?

Greco-Turkish war

The greeks claimed 3 victories, and the turks one. Only one victory is confirmed by both the greek and the turkish archives : 25 july 1922, Sgt Christophoros Stavropoulos in a SPAD VII shots down a turkish Breguet 14 in the north of Afyon Karahissar, killing the turkish crew, Ahmet Bahattin Bayram (pilot) and Cemal Bey (observer), after a furious dogfight.

The greek troops buried the turkish aviators after a muslim ceremony with full military honors. The Greek aviators launch a message written in French to the Turkish aviators, indicating that "their funerals took place yesterday in Afyon Karahisar with all the honors which belong to heroes. We ask you to receive our condolences for the tragic death of two brave men ".

A nice act of chivalery in this bloody war.

Regards,
DTB

Greco-Turkish War

Hello Spad and DTB, Thanks for raising the question about this little known war. And also the details of one confirmed aerial victory. Do you know of any incidences where aircraft on either side were shot down by ground fire??? August

Hello August,

Well, as I know, no plane was lost from ground fire. But mechanical problems took a heavy toll on both sides. The greek pilots often had to make emergency landings for engine troubles : the greek high command was not very concerned with supply of spares. The turks also knew these kind of problems, they lost one crew from an engine fire on 18th august 1921.

Regards,
DTB

Hello DTB, Do you know the names of the Turkish crew (and the unit and type of aircraft) that were lost on 18 August 1921 due to engine fire?

I haven't had time to thoroughly examine this conflict but gather whatever details I can to build small files. Cheers, august
