One additional problem with the cannon-equipped SPAD, which Guynemer referred to as his "magic machine", was that the breech of the cannon was essentially between the pilot's knees. This prevented the installation of the control stick usually found on SPAD ships. An old Deperdussin control system design, with which most pilots were unfamiliar, was used. This made the SPAD XII rather difficult to fly unless the pilot was exceptionally skillful.
