First French air to air victory

Hello Roser,

The first French air victory recorded was on 5 October 1914.
Sgt. Franz and Sol. Quénault shot down an Aviatik B. The crew Sgt. Wilhelm Schlichting and Obltn. Fritz von Zangen, aircraft N? B 114/14, Fl.Abt. 18, were KIA.

Hello Roser,

Sorry, I misspelled a name. It should be Sgt. Joseph Frantz and Louis Quénault from V 24. They flew a Voisin.

Picture.

Hello roser,

I searched a little more and found this picture of the victory of Frantz and Quénault.
It was printed in an Italian magazine in 1914. Italy was still neutral then. The
French plane is in this picture a monoplane, but it should be a Voisin biplane.

Hi,
If meant as question than Feldwebel is most similar to French sergeant.
see for example http://www.theaerodrome.com/aces/ranks/index.html
Honza.

Foto Frantz & Quénault

Hallo Roser,

Ter aanvulling.

Fr. & Q. were on patrol over Vesle when they saw the Aviatik. Quénault fired some 47 rounds with his Hotchkiss gun. Then the gun jammed, but the Aviatik when down.

Now, how did the French gunner keep that kepi on his head in an 80-mph slipstream?

But seriously...

Other accounts say that Quenault used a rifle. The photo seems to prove it was an MG.
