Sublocotenent Marin Popescu- Romanian Ace?

I got this from the WarChron forum when I asked about Romanian fighter pilots- http://www.warchron.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=150. It appears that at least one Romanian may have become an ace.

"Romanian airmen, both fighter pilots and two-seater crews, were very active during the war August 1916 - November 1917. They claimed at least 67 enemy aircraft, including six by pilot Sublocotenent Marin Popescu of ESC.N.11 (Nieuport). Romanian artillery claimed 40 enemy aircraft shot down, with 23 of those being confirmed."

Would anyone here have any further info about Romanian pilots or any biographical info about Popescu? Or any photos? Any information anyone here has will be appreciated. THANKS!

Romanian Airmen WWI

Hello Joe Gertler, Thank you for posting details about the Air Aces Home Page. It was new to me. The numbers quoted for Romanian fighter pilots from the book Istoria Aviatiei Romane, published in 1984, do not entirely match the further archival research done by Professor Valeriu Avram, which also includes two-seater crews. A major part of the problem of assigning numbers to Romanian "victories" is the almost total lack of information about German losses. On the other hand all Austro-Hungarian losses in that theatre have been verified by Karl Meindl.

It should also be remembered that the information about the Russians on the Air Aces Home Page, mostly taken from the book by Durkota, DArcey and Kulikov, is also not entirely accurate. Cheers, August

Brewdog,

Go to the bottom of the page, for the link labelled World War One Aces. Click on it, and then find Romania in the list of countries.

Frank.
