Scott,
why have you got Ray Hinchliffe listed?
I see you quote the fairy story that he put in his logbook:
Quote:

Wounded in action on 3 June 1918: "Night patrol alone to intercept Gothas. Very dark — no moon, slight ground mist; attacked one machine which had been picked up in the searchlights over Hazebrouck. During the encounter I was shot through the forehead. As a result I crashed on top of a forest fracturing head and face."

I can assure you that what actually happened was a member of his flight made a forced landing in a field with engine trouble. Ray went to retreive the Camel, got the engine fixed and elected to fly the machine out just as the light was fading. One wheel caught a stook of corn or something and he piled in suffering severe facial injuries including the loss of an eye. No Gothas!!!
He was a notorious liar and kleptomaniac, and was in fact asked to resign his commission in the Army or face a courts martial. He left the RAF in similar mysterious circumstances in 1919, resigning under threat of sacking by Portal.
I have several photos of him if you want one - with or without eye-patch.
