Question Pilot Tanneberger

Hello,
I am looking for more information about Pilot Tanneberger. In 1914/15 he was pilot in Travemuende airport. Later he was member of AFA 204/FA A 204.

What units were in Travemuende in 1914/15 (a flying school) ?

For any kind of help, thanks.

Buddecke

I don´t think there were any other or special military units.

Flying school Travemünde itself belonged to the enterprise DFW (Deutsche Flugzeug-Werke) in Leipzig. It was a "Fliegerschule unter militärischem Kommando" in this time.
Often trainees from FEA 6 Großenhain/Saxony were commanded from there to Travemünde to get parts of their pilot training there.
Therefore I think your pilot Tanneberger was either trainee or trainer himself.
BTW FA A 204 became a Royal-Saxon unit in Fall 1917.

Hi Buddecke

I am not quite sure but I think it existed two different flying schools in Travemünde during 1915....

First the Militärfliegerschule Schwerin-Görries (Fokker) which was formed on 1 Mar 1914 and dissolved on 20 Dec 1915.

The second was Militärfliegerschule Travemünde (DFW ?) which probably was formed 27 Feb 1915(?) and it existed until EOW....

Perhaps someone have better information...?

I have the following information, Gunnar!

To my knowledge Schwerin-Görries has nothing to do with Travemünde (Schwerin is situated far away from Travemünde near Lübeck).

Airfield Travemünde-Priwall was opened in June 1914.

Travemünde was a part of the enterprise DFW but after the death of Kommerzienrat Meyer (April 1917) it was sold to Fokker not before 20 August 1917!

Nevertheless I will study the relevant 2 books about the airfield´s history by Dirschauer and see what he did write about the matter.

Gunnar,

meanwhile I have seen an entry "Militärfliegerschule Travemünde (Fokker)", connected with the date 28 February 1914 - maybe a dependency of Schwerin-Görries.

Nevertheless I would bet Tanneberger was with DFW-school in Travemünde because this school was under FEA 6 command since August 1914 and FEA 6 created AFA 204 too.

Speaking of "Tannenburger"--anybody know the crews/unit(s) that did the aerial recon leading to the German victory in 1914?

Barrett,

at least two German aircrews contributed to the victory of Tannenberg with flights on 30 August 1914.
According to GLT von Cochenhausen in the book "Wille und Tat":
Lt Canter / Lt Mertens and Lt Hesse / Lt Körner (both FFA 14).
To my knowledge especially Lt Canter was called Flieger von Tannenberg.
That seems to be strange because he was only the pilot and not observer but he was a born East Prussian and knew his homeland very well.
Kurt (Curt?) Canter was also a famous pre-war military pilot.

On 9 September 1914 Canter and Mertens got EK I for their deed by Prussian General von Francois himself. On 17 September 1914 Hesse and Körner got the same award.

Here the photo of Tanneberger´s plane in front of the airport Luebeck-Travemuende. The photo shows a "Taube" Eindecker on the left side. Photo must be taken in year 1914 or 1915.

Later Tanneberger crashed this plane.
