Barker and 66 Squadron

Hello!

Can anybody tell me if Billy Barker went from 28 Squadron to 66 Squadron when the latter was still RFC? Or there is any change of numbers the 1st of April 1918 when the RAF is founded?

Thanks a lot!

Andrea

As noted in Wayne Ralph's excellent biography Barker VC, Barker joined 66 Squadron on 10 April.

Well, thanks a lot. So it was officially 66 Squadron RAF, I guess.

Great syntesis for the famous Barker's Christmas 1917 raid and the lousy Austrian counter-attack of the next morning...

Squadron numbers

Angiolillodrea also asked "Or there is any change of numbers the 1st of April 1918 when the RAF is founded?"

I believe that RNAS numbers were converted on 1 April 1918 by adding 200, but am not aware of any other conversion. Anyone?

No the RFC numbers did not change on April 1, 1918, only the designation from RFC to RAF. RNAS squadrons changed as noted above. The only RFC squadrons to be renumbered in WWI were 68 and 71 that were used to form AFC squadrons 2 and 4, respectively in Jan, 1918. 55, 99, 104, 115 and 216 RAF Squadrons were transferred to the Independant Air Force but kept the same numbers.

BTW, it is more appropriate to call him Will Barker, he never went by the name Billy and no one called him that when he was alive.
