Jasta 11 group portrait,

Probably many of you will have seen the composite portrait drawing of Jasta 11 pilots by Arnold Busch, in the Guido Scheffer photo collection on the Rosebud site. I can't attach it here, it's too many KBs, but here it the link to it:
http://www.earlyaviator.com/archive/...cheffer.kh.jpg

I would be fascinated to know more about these men. Looking them up on the 'Aces' section of this site gives the following, but of course only works for those with five or more victories. So what I have is:

Manfred von Richthofen: 80 victories, KIA 21/4/18
Lothar von Richthofen: 40 vic KIFA 6/7/22
Kurt Wolff 33 vic KIA 15/9/17
(I didn't need to look those up!)
Carl August Von Schoenebeck: 8 victories died 4/9/89 (is that date correct?)
Otto Brauneck 10 victories KIA 26/7/17
Eberhardt Mohnicke 9 vic died 14/10/30 (anyone know how he died?)
Gisbert-Wilhelm Groos 7 victories died 1997
Alfred Niederhoff 7 vic KIA 28/7/17
Wilhelm Reinhardt 20 vic KIFA 3/7/18
Hans Wolff 10 vic KIA 16/5/18

So that leaves:
Stapenhorst
Bockelmann
Bodenschatz
Busch (the artist)
Meyer
Muller (several Mullers on the aces list but none with Jasta 11)
Krefft

And finally, what of Guido Scheffer, the owner of the photos? The captions give some details. He is said to have no victories, but he appears to have been a good mate of the Richthofens judging by the photos. However he was awarded the EK1 as a two-seater pilot in 1916. His role in Jasta 11 is described as : OzBV - Offizier von Besonderen Verwendung. Anyone know what that means?

JG1 references

Hello Adrian,

Currently I'm reading The Red Baron Combat Wing by Peter Kilduff and it includes mentions of the people you've listed. Another good source would be Hunting With Richthofen as translated by Jan Hayzlett. Assorted information on all of these people can be found in these two excellent works.

Best Regards,

FliegerJG1

Adrian- Guido Scheffer was a good friend of both Werner Voss and MvR and there are several photos in the Guido Scheffer album showing Guido flying MvR for a meeting with Voss at the Voss family house in Krefeld. The OzbV was an adjutant, a normally non-combat position Guido held at Jasta 11 from July-December 1917. For information on all the Jasta pilots, not just the aces, try, not coincidentally, The Jasta Pilots by Norman Franks, Frank Bailey and Rick Duiven.

Bodenschatz was the OzbV for JG I. Krefft was the technical officer for JG I, sort of chief of maintenance.

Adrian,

Meyer is Karl Meyer = Carlos Meyer Baldo. If you can read Spanish, Dario Silva has a page about him here.

You should also be able to find posts about him by doing a search here on the forum.

He had been the adjudant of Jasta 2 (his first action was bringing the body of Oswald Boelcke the his hometown), later became adjudant of Jasta 11 and the Jagdgeschwader I. ... Due to his relationship to the last leader of JG I, Herrmann Göring, he became a General in the Luftwaffe during WW2. He was wounded in the bomb attack on Hitler on 20th july 1944 in East Prussia...

Thanks, everyone, for all of these answers. I'll try and get hold of one of these books.

One thing that stands out is the arbitrary nature of Warfare and of life in general - two of these men were killed days after the drawings were done, several more did not survive the war, but at least three lived at least to their late 80's and one [Groos] must have been about 100.
