Hi,

an interesting example about the antisemitism in the GAS during WW1 was researched by Joachim Raich. He wrote an quite interesting article about the matter in OTF 2/2000 : "Gustav Samuel (1887-1954) Not a comrade? The Story of a Jewish Airman with Royal Bavarian Schutzstaffel 22."

It seems so as if the "antisemitism" in this article is a little bit constructed to write an interesting story. A bad thing for an historian.

Has anybody realized that the idol of Hermann Göring in his youthtime has had a jewish father and that Hermann's younger brother Albert did have a jewish grandfather?

It is true that Görings godfather was von Eppenstein (a Catholic -I dont know how far back his family converted) but that he was responsible for Albert is only conjecture. H.G. first wife Karin was a Nazi and when Hermann was committed to a sanatorium in Sweden for his drug addiction he swore at the Swedish doctors that 'the Jews were paying for his internment'. As he advanced in the Nazi party he became more anti-semetic. Are you implying that the head of the Gestappo and the SS is only being accused of anti-semitism in order to make up a story? Lawrence.

Without any doubt the godfather of Hermann Göring, Hermann Ritter von Epenstein, has had a jewish background. From the chronicle of the Veldenstein castle: Die Besitzerin verkaufte die Burg am 29. November 1897 dem jüdischen Stabsarzt Dr. med. Hermann von Epenstein, Gutsbesitzer in Berlin, für 20.000 Mark.

I Said That He Asked...

Dear FokkerJ, Thanks for the interest in my novel. Like I said, he requests asylum following a pretty nasty altercation before taking off that involved some ground personnel that go after him physically.

There is at least one documented case of a Central Powers flyer landing at an Allied airfield, requesting asylum and receiving it. I believe the case that comes to mind dealt with a Czech or Polish pilot landing at a French aerodrome and within months he was flying for the French. A pretty gutsy thing to do if he was forced down and "captured" by his former pals.

The main thing in the plot is that while it is obvious that he will survive the war (even as a P.O.W.); he knows in his heart that as a Jew he doesn't have a future in a defeated Germany. Anyway I thought it was the best way for this complex character to exit the story with his core values intact. VR, Roadhog "Memento mori."

I am not disputing the fact that Görings godfather was of Jewish descent - I do take exception to your remark that the anti-semitism is
is being exagerated purely for sensationalism. If I may quote from the sales brochure of 'Germania International'..."From sources in Prussia we discovered that the cherubic angels on its side may be connected to the von Epenstein family. Hermann Ritter von Epenstein was Göring's godfather, whom he admired intensely. This aristrocratic family (part Jewish) was none the less the early patron of the young Hermann Göring and the family Göring lived in Epenstein's castles, Mautendorff and Veldenstein. There are unsubstantiated tales of secret liasons between Göring's mother and von Epenstein. The ring may have been designed from wall decorations at Veldenstein. Epenstein was a fervent Roman Catholic and angels dominated much of the décor in the ancient hall and walls of the family castles"... (a discription of a ring that Göring designed).

The Epenstein's where NOT an aristrocratic family. You may research why Dr. Hermann Epenstein could call himself a "Ritter".

ROADHOG's Novel

Dear Mr. ROADHOG, You are welcome! It all sounds good to me. As long as it is historically credible, that's always a plus to me. GOOD LUCK, FOKKERJ P.S. Sure is alot of six pointed stars emblazoned on individual aircraft fuselage. Even a whole FLIK possibly!
