Zeppelin Ace Linnarz

I posted some of these pix for the jaded medal heads over at GMIC, but you'll probably get a kick out of them, too.

Ray Rimmel's latest on Zeps came out six months ago or so...

In it he mentioned the famous series of illustrations done by Felix Schwormstadt of the inside of a Zeppelin's gondolas during a raid. Rimmel IDs the sitters (or fighters) for this series as being the crew of LZ 38, commanded by Linnarz, while on a raid over London.

That made my heart glad because I have Linnarz's medals and did not make the connection. Coincidentally I had framed a copy of the illustration of the commander's gondola to display next to Linnarz's medals--only to learn they actually did belong together!

See the resemblance?

And here are the medals...

But what are those badges? Not even Detlev could ID them all...

Well, two are obvious, the snub nose one on the right is a Zeppelin badge that was probably left on a flea market table outside Berlin last year because "the picker did not have enough to buy the medals and the cigar box full of other things."

But thanks to another crewmember of LZ 38 I was able to identify that funny looking medal at nine o'clock in the group of four.

These iron plaques were given to every member of the crew after that first successful raid on London, and Volkmann, Linnarz's Schraubenzieher, got the Ehrenbecher in 1919.

What a fashion plate Linnarz was! Look at those leathers!!!

Here is Linnarz in the rotogravure with his war bride after the big raid...

Maybe the Kaiser was jealous. Is that why Linnarz didn't get a PLM?

Great stuff, John, I get excited every time I see that group. And that Thorbecher is incredible.

I always liked Schwormstädts Zeppelin-works but I did never care for the identification of the persons. Thank you very much for the information and the fine photographs. I wonder why they wrote "Thor" without "H" - looks like the artist was not aware of the correct spelling or got wrong orders.

I was quite pleased to fin Ray's old "Zeppelin!" hardcover in the main library here recently. This makes a fine addendum. Thanks for sharing Aerowallah!
