I'm new here and I think you are chumming by asking "who is Meyer," but I will answer it anyway:

Meyer was nobody, just a Jewish-sounding name that came to Goering when he said "If British bombers ever appear over Berlin my name is Meyer."

Goering was a kidder. He also reputedly said "When somebody mentions the word 'culture,' I reach for my revolver." Yet he became the biggest art thief in history.

I don't know if it was a Jewish sounding name. But I believe "Meyer" is a fairly common surname in Germany. So Goering was saying, "You can call me Joe Shmo, Joe Dirt, etc" (a lowly commoner). No offence to anyone named Meyer.

I can't remember where I heard this, but the story has it that the people (survivors) of Hamburg used the "Meyer" name very often after the fire bombings.
