Greetings Hans..
Please do keep us informed of what you learn from the archives of Ballincollig. It could be, for example, that Mrs. Mannock returned home with her other children, expecting that her husband would join her later. You may have uncovered a new thread of information about one of the true heroes of the Great War!

I have it on good authority that, according to German records, he was never actually born. British claims to the contrary are merely unconfirmed wishful thinking.

Mick and the Mixers

It is remarkable that even the date upon which so renowned a pilot was born incites debate ... I wonder if the situation might be one of birth in one location and registration of birth in a different location?

As to the victory total, I admit to having believed that Jones simply arrived at a total of 73, but, the comments by D Filsell in the thread Publicising the Aces may inspire a change of opinion. However, were it not Jones, someone decided that Mannock was the man with the most, not Bishop given credit for 72 victories, and so must have had 73 victories. All rather bothersome when one considers that another from the United Kingdom and another from Canada, McCudden and Barker, certainly, downed more aircraft than either.

Salut!
Kirk

It's remarkable that the VC Society mailed me with the message that Mannock VC was born Preston Barracks, Brighton. Even Lord Aschroft, writer of 'Victoria Cross Heroes' and the greatest VC collector in the world, writes this information in his book. But as it seems Mannock VC was born in Ballincollig.

I just can't understand why there has to be so much different information about a very simple question......, where was VC-recipient Mannock VC born ?

To keep the pot boiling, I've put together a list of Mannock's claims I believe to have been deemed "decisive". Where possible I've quoted from the relevant RFC or RAF Communiqué and/or the 2 Brigade List of EA shot down and driven down out of control (Air 1/1580/204/81/52).

As ever, constructive comments, nit-picking etc are welcome:

Claims 1 to 16 with No 40 Sqn RFC

1. 07-May-17 09:35 Quiery-la-Motte in Nieuport A6733 Balloon In Flames

RFC Communiqué 87: An attack on German balloons was carried out by seven Nieuports of 40 Squadron. The pilots crossed the lines at about 20 feet and, as on a previous occasion, artillery put a barrage on the German trenches, while 12 other aeroplanes crossed the lines at the same time at a considerable height in order to draw the attention of anti-aircraft gunners. Seven German balloons were destroyed; three caught fire high up, two burst into flames when near the ground, and two when on the ground. The names of the pilots who took part in the attack are: 2nd Lts L L Morgan, C S Hall, C W Cudemore, H B Redler, E Mannock, J Parry and Captain W Nixon who failed to return.

2. 07-Jun-17 07:15 north of Lille in Nieuport B1552 Albatros DIII Out of Control + 25 RFC

RFC Communiqué 91: 2nd Lts A E Godfrey and E Mannock, 40 Squadron, each destroyed an HA. Lt C T Lally & 2nd Lt Williams, 25 Squadron, drove down one HA out of control and assisted in the destruction of another.

Vfw Franz Eberlein, Jasta 33, Wia [?]

3. 12-Jul-17 10:10 Avion, south of Lens in Nieuport B1682 DFW CV Captured

Captain E Mannock of the same squadron drove down an EA out of control near Lens. The Communiqué is misleading as there were two encounters; Keen made his claims at 09:15 while Mannock and Hall made theirs at 12:15 and 12:50, respectively.
