On a personal note. Tuesday afternoon I had a pretty good heart attack and wound up in the hospital for over three days. They put in a stent. Lordy it hurt like hell. Maybe we could meet in Marysville and comapre notes on your research when I can drive again. Scott
Mate,
I am glad that you survived that one " I think they call it the widow maker".

At least one of the three that I had was called that and all of them hurt like hell - like the devil biting on my A__

Anyway, I am really glad that you are still with us. BTW we still have a whole group more to say on the conversatin we had that lasted 3 hr but felt like 20 min. We need to do that again.

Drop me a line when you get a chance, and BTW did you ever get my e-mails?

P.S. I knew that the radiator went down the right side - it was a triva question to bring all of you out of the wood work. Thanks for the response. tc

Roadhog, thats great. I was wondering if my email address for you was out of order. Name the time and place again and we will see if I can make it happen.

Sorry Tom, I'm starting to feel like a thread hijacker. But then again, when does any Voss thread stay on track?

Regarding the lack of Voss' Pfalz and D.V photos: I was perusing that Aces & Aeroplanes book last night and I came across the following related paragraph, in which Dennis Hylands wrote:

"In July 1917, Jasta 10 was equipped with the Pfalz DIII, an aeroplane never favoured by Voss, and he made only four flights in the type before an Albatros DV, which he reportedly had painted a pale green, was placed at his disposal".

Also, in correction to my earlier statement that Voss received FI.103/17 in September. He actually made his first operational flight using it on 28th August.

Regards.

Bucky

Mate,

I suspect Voss' Albatros D.V may have simply carried the #1. Just a thought.

Mates,

I have read about zero, concerning Voss flying an Albatros D.V. Maybe took it up for a test flight but do not think that he flew it into combat.

There are reports that he took the Pfalz D.III and nipped a few allied aircraft with it ( I think 4) but that is the only things I have read to date.

Well Tom, apart from the above quote from Dennis Hylands, I hope Greg won't mind me quoting this paragraph from his Pfalz Scout Aces book, page 20:

"When interviewed by historian Alex Imrie in 1961, Voss' mechanic Karl Timm recalled that he followed the ace from Jasta 5 to Jasta 10 to 'maintain his Pfalz DIII. This Machine was not popular, and Voss only scored four victories with it before he received the Fokker Triplane'.
Voss certainly flew a Pfalz (along with an Albatros DV) at Jasta 10, but it is nearly impossible to confirm that he scored four victories on the type. From his arrival at the unit until his first victory in Fokker FI 103/17 on 3 September, Voss did indeed claim four victims, but the aircraft he flew whilst doing so is not recorded".

Then there's this from Barry Diggens' September Evening, page 66:

"...he (Voss) and his pilots familiarised themselves with their new Pfalz DIII's, with which the Jasta had been re-equipped towards the end of July. Pfalz and Albatros scouts were fairly well matched for speed and performance, if anything the Pfalz was more manoeuvrable, and could dive faster and harder than any Albatros, yet many German pilots never favoured the type, and this included Voss. Although he scored four victories whilst flying a Pfalz he thought it less responsive and soon reverted to using an Albatros DV for patrol work."

Stephen.
That's an interesting observation regarding the No.1 on Voss' DV...What makes you think that?

Regards.

Bucky
