WW1, WW2 and the OSS.

Gentlemen:
Someone had mentioned the New York 69th Regiment which was commanded by Col. William James Donovan. Served in WW2 as the head of the Office of Strategic Services, O.S.S. from which became the C.I.A.
Blue skies,

Several British composers served and several were killed during WW I.

Sir Arthur Bliss, of England: enlisted in the 13th Battalion, Royal Fuseliers in 1914. I have some of his music on record and CD's.

George Butterworth, of England: He was a Lt. in the Durham Light Infantry and received the Military Cross. He was killed at age 31 by a sniper in 1916 leading a raid during the Somme Offensive at Pozieres. He was just starting to come into his own as a composer when the war started. We lost a lot of fine music with his death.

Ernest Farrar, of England: noted mainly for being the major teacher of the Composer Finzi, but a prolific composer himself. Enlisted in the Grenadier Guards in 1915. Promoted to 2nd Lt. of the 3rd Battalion, Devonshire Regiment in 1918. Killed in the Battle of Epepheny, Ronnoy.

Hi Jenny,
thanks for the great list. The Canadian doctor Norman Bethune was a subject of a film I saw some years ago with Donald Sutherland in the title role. It depicted mainly his experiences in China and was simply called 'Bethune' if I recall. I don't think it ever got a cinema release but went straight to video down here.
re: H H Munroe- were they really his last words? That ranks with that Union General in 1864 whose last words were 'Those Rebs couldn't hit an elephant at this dist-..."!!!
You mentioned a few nurses, thank you for that as I work as a nurse in a hospital down here in Australia. Male nurses are still a minority group but we are slowly growing in number.
One more I can add (forgive me if some-one already has)-
James Whale:- (UK) Film director who helmed such films as 'Frankenstein', 'Waterloo Bridge', 'The Man in the iron mask' and 'Showboat'. He served as an officer in the British army with the rank of Second Lieutenant, enlisting in 1915 and seeing considerable action on the Western front. He was captured in August 1917 and spent the remainder of the war in a POW camp. Highly traumatized by his wartime experiences, they were a major factor in his eventual suicide by drowning in his Hollywood home in 1957. The recent film "Gods and Monsters" which starred Ian Mackellen and Brendan Fraser depicted the final months of his life albeit in a semi-fictional sense.
Thanks again Jenny and everyone else who has contributed. If there are any more I would love to know! Pete

Another for the list!

Harvey Dunn--1884-1952 American artist & illustrator. In 1917, although 33 years old, he was chosen as one of 8 artists to work at the Front as combat illustrators/reporters. He produced many powerful moving works documenting the horrors of war. He had hoped to be able to transfer to canvas many of his battfield sketches working at the War College but he was demobilized after the war and this project was not realized. Today, his works can be viewed at the Smithsonian Museum of American History and the South Dakota Art Museum in Brookings, South Dakota, USA.
