Ira "Taffy" Jones

What did Taffy Jones do prior to joining the RFC ? Had he been in another branch of the service (i.e. infantry, etc.) ?

Bonjour bastable9!

J.I.T. Jones was a member of the 4th Welch Territorials prior to the commencement of The Great War having joined in 1913. Inspired by the tale of the wireless operator that would not leave the post while on the sinking Titanic he took a course at the British School of Telegraphy. Following the outbreak of war, while waiting for the word from the 4th Welch Territorials, Jones joined the R.F.C. and, after basic training at the Farnborough Depot, was posted to Netheravon to serve with 10 Squadron as a 1st Class Air Mechanic performing wireless tasks.

A fine new stone has been placed recently on his grave after years of neglect had deteriorated the original. I visited there last May when the National Eisteddfod of Wales was at nearby Caerfyrddin (Carmarthen).
