It’s high time to explain this discussion to all those who have not seen the movie: there is a (fictional) member of the Flying Circus named Sternberg (Sterni) who is Jewish and a close friend of MvR. The man is killed in action (in a horrible way) and deeply mourned by MvR. There has indeed been criticism from various sides, basically saying that there can’t be anything coming from Germany that doesn’t somehow manage to include hints of WW II and Nazi crimes in one way or the other. The leading role of the Jewish character may be fictional but still – as Hautz put it and I do absolutely agree with him- it obviously doesn’t lack at least some historical background and that’s what makes it interesting. It is rumoured that the German High Command had secret lists of Jewish soldiers and had investigations running to find out if they were hiding on safe posts or "really" serving the Vaterland. Nobody knows what those lists and investigation results were used for in the end but it makes me like the Lübbert anecdote even more.
Voss, MvR, Lehmann, Sternberg (in a coat inspired by the one MvR owned)
and Moritz, obviously wearing a fur coat over his own pelt, too...
