I'm trying to find out information on my Grandfather, Frederick Ernest Jones. He was born in England 21 May 1881, and moved to Canada at an early age after his father died.
According to his official Canadian "Attestation Paper" (#A-18522)I believe he joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 23 March 1915 under the name Ernest Frederick Jones. He did not list a present address on the form, only his mother's address in London. I think he was living in Illinois, USA, and went to Canada to enlist because the Yanks were not in the war yet, and that is why he switched his first and last names and listed his birthdate on 15 Nov 1889. These changes protected is US citizenship, but have made if very difficult for me to find any records on him
He was a Canadian pilot and I believe he was the Red Baron's 75th kill on 2 April 1918. He was listed as Ernest Jones and said that after the Red Baron had shot him down, he banked and saluated him.
I know that he was an instructor for the Canadian Royal Flying Corps in Houston, Texas, at Camp Taliaferro or Love Field in Dallas, TX. I have photos of him next to plane, but no information on his wartime service, unit, decorations, or anything. Can anyone help?
He got married in Texas, had two sons, and passed away in 1977. He was always very private about his service in the Great War. His son, Fred Jones, is 80-years-old, and would love to learn a little more about his father.
