A proud JJ stands over his latest score, two RAF airmen: a pilot on the left and an observer on the right. JJ had mortally wounded their aircraft, close to his Flanders aerodrome and forced them to land out. Here he stands with the two men, his PLM on display and the observer wearing a forehead bandage I believe, probably due to the impact of the broken bird. . .
This is the crew of the Armstrong Whitworth FK8 C8571 from "A" flight 82 Sqn which he brought down on Sept. 15, 1918. The pilot 2/Lt. H.T. Hempsall and the observer was Lt. J.H.M. Yeomans MC and had been crewed together since 24 Aug. 1918.

Talking query

Odd-so the Observer is wearing his service uniform?

I thought only Officers wore service dress and it was the other ranks who wore utility dress!

Ltn Joeph Jacobs and the quest for the 2nd DEVIL image

Hello van der Laan. Been enjoying this thread and thought I might contribute something to it that might be of interest. Here is a reconstruction of Ltn. Jacobs' medal bar.

[IMG][/IMG]

Topmost is the Pour le Merite. Middle from the left are Iron Cross 2nd Class, Knight's Cross with Swords of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern, Knight 2nd Class with Swords of the Saxe-Ernestine House Order, Knight 2nd Class with Swords of the Order of the White Falcon, Hamburg Hanseatic Cross, Oldenburg Friedrich August Cross 2nd Class, Reuss Honor Cross 3rd Class with Swords. Bottom from left is Iron Cross 1st Class, Prussian Pilot's Badge, and German Wound Badge in Silver. All are authentic except the Pour le Merite which is a replica. Best regards, Dave.

Wow !!!!!!

A tremendous collection, I would love to hear the tales of the “FINDS” you made and ran across to build it. Thanks so much for posting those.

I promise in the near future I’ll contribute more of my Jacobs fotos, this next phase will be concerning his private moments and private life. Can’t do it right now as I’ve just got too many balls in the air at once but, right around the corner there are another 40 really trippy fotos that need posting to help tell the tale.

Thanks again.

Bump

Hi Friends,

We've got to keep this thread alive! Here is a crude but fascinating painting of Jasta 7 in action against Spads from Escadrille SPA 3:

This charming image was published on the back cover of Neal O'Connor's Volume II, Aviation Awards of Imperial Germany and the Men who Earned Them - The Aviation Awards of the Kongdom of Prussia. Neal's caption for the painting was:

"Artist's interpretation of Jacobs' all-black Fokker triplane with the devil's head marking in action, painted circa 1919. Although crudely rendered and containing several inaccuracies, it was proudly displayed in Jacobs' home until his death in 1978."

We all know that Jasta 7 was never fully equipped with black Triplanes as the painting indicates. However, what is interesting in the light of recent revelations on this forum, is the fact that the Triplane at the extreme right looks very much like the one frequently photographed with Jacobs, and described in combat reports for 470/17. It seems to be in the lead...confirming (?) that the one with the "God of the North Wind" emblem was indeed being flown by Jupp Böhne.

This wonderful image comes from Lance Bronnenkant. You can find it in his second book, The Imperial German Eagles in World War I, Their Postcards and Pictures, Volume 2. It shows Jacobs' black Triplane in a line-up of Jasta 7 Fokker D.VII's.

Thanks for that photo. That's one I haven't seen before. I love the mix if the D.VII's with JJ's Dr.I.
