Hi,

Here's what Capitaine Thenault had to say about the "Tangos", on page 147 of The Story of the Lafayette Escadrille.

"We were pleased - which is one way of putting it - to meet again at Verdun our old acquaintances the 'Tangos'. This Boche formation was so-called because the body of its planes was painted the exact shade of orange shade called tango. As they were there we had to meet them in good spirit which we did. They were among the most famous of the German flying men, and the game was fast and furious from the start....The Tangos might come. With their brave comrades of the French army the pilots of the Lafayette Escadrille were there...The Tangos were only men and Lufbery gave them a hard life."

Bulldog, that's interesting! Over the years we've had some noteable relatives here, though none seem to linger. I can think of a few Canadians including Roy Brown's daughter (a visitor anyway), Gerry Birks' granddaughter, one or two Lukes and a relative of Sebastian Festner. Don't know if Phil Nungesser ever drops in but he's been mentioned a time or two. No Rickenbackers or "vons" that I recall.

Absent a Byline?

Barrett

It is not at all surprising that the article did not carry a byline. During
the "glory days" of journalism, from the late 19th Century through the
middle of the 20th, reporters regard themselves as working stiffs and
tradesmen just doing a job. Look at "The Front Page" (the play and movie
versions) by Charles MacArthur & Ben Hecht to get the classic portrayal.
There was no hint of the cult of personality and quasi-celebrity that
taints the enterprise of journalism in our time. If this reporter's managing
editor did not want to give him a byline--for ANY reason-- that was the end of the discussion. Reporters who worked their way up the ladder to become
columnists were a different animal; they did develop followings, and they
no longer had to worry about bylines. Fonck came across very well here--
merci beaucoup, xjouve!

Regards

Josquin

Here's an item about GW newspaper reporting. Note that The Times of London assigned a retired Lt Col to the role.
