Goering's Reputation with Peers

Hi Guys

I have read that Goering was the only ex pilot not to be invited to either JG1 or Jasta 11 (can't remember which one) post war reunions.

I was curious whether this was more a result of his later associations with the Nazi party, or did this occur in the immediate post war period prior to the formation of the party, and due solely to his reputation and popularity (or lack of) within the Jasta group?

Regards

Damian Latimer

Regarless of his ww1 efforts - which are not that big if you believe LvR - they're overshadowed by his war crimes in his later years.
He was a person who certainly deserved no respect or even admiration.

Despite of all his warcrimes:
I've read he saved the lives of the jewish war-pilots Willi Rosenstein (his former wingman during his command at Jasta 27) and Fritz Beckhardt by his political influence when the Nazis tried to arrest them. So Rosenstein was able to escape to South Africa and Beckhardt to Switzerland.
Only my 2 Cents!

Yes, yes...and Adolf the Austrian was a gifted and brave dispatch rider, highly decorated in WWI and he loved the alps and german shepherds.

I really only can wonder about how anybody can find any good side on this man Göring. He was not Hitlers 'yes'-man, he was one of his best complices. He ordered Heydrich to plan the Endloesung. And as a head of the Luftwaffe he was a complete failure. Hey! Read his biography.

I like what you say Hans---as long as you don't mean the biography written by David Irving!

Don’t like what he did under the Nazi regime either.

However, although it is sometimes hard to do, I like to separate his involvement in WWI from what he did after this. I think no one can deny his achievement as a pilot in WW1. Again, please don't get me wrong, I am in no way condoning, or agreeing with, what he did after WW1 under the Nazis.

Not Jasta 11.

Hi Willi:
A minor point Willi, El Gordo, did not command Jasta 11, He commanded, Jagdgeschwader Nr.1 Richthofen.
Blue skies Willi,

There was a fairly definitive article about his fighting career in Over the Front some years back. Short summary was that as a wartime fighter pilot and leader, he did the job. The author concluded regretfully that had he died in 1918, he'd be remembered as a hero instead of a monster.

Here's a remarakably clear-headed novel about him:
Amazon.com: The Knight, Death, and the Devil: Ella Leffland: Books

and if you haven't got the time, look up Len Deighton's short story "A New Way of Saying Good Night".
