Kate Otersdorf and MvR were not romantically involved. She was of a different social class. Where did you get that information? I think that is an assumption.

The photo at :37 is MvR. It is just a bad copy from a low resolution print that has been botched up and the highlights blown out and details flattened.

That's true MvR did not have or display any personal Symbols.

MvR's planes would first have the factory camouflage when it arrived to the aerodrome. Now here is were it get all mixed up. some of them would have the unit markings of Jasta 11 some others had some personal markings that included the red paint and then again some had a mix of both, unit markings and personal markings (the red color).

Each plane may have had different markings on it depending on what month it was. There are photos taken at different times that will show different markings this included the National cross symbol as it had gone through several changes. For a list of these changes I would suggest your read Dan-Dan Abbott's article on "German National Markings" in the article section of this forum.

We have talked about this so many times before that I would suggest doing a search in the forum for all the older threads.

my old MvR video:

i read "The Illustrated Red Baron" book now and i find this:

When the Ehrenbecher (Cup of Honour) was
established to reward combat airmen for shooting
down enemy aeroplanes, the first two were presented
to Oswald Boelcl<e and Max Immelmann on
Christmas Eve 1915. Boelcke described the scene: 'In
the evening we officers exchanged Christmas
presents in the officers' mess, where at the same time
various awards were distributed. For me there was a
very beautiful silver goblet next to other small articles.
This goblet, bearing the inscription "Dem Sieger
im Luftkampf" [To the Victor in Aerial Combat], had
been presented to me by the Chief of Field Aviation
[Major Hermann von der
Lieth-Thomsen]. Immelmann
received the
same.'4 Boelcke had
scored six victories and
Immelmann seven at the
time they received their one-litre silver goblets, which were produced at the direction of kaiser
Wilhelm II by Godet, an exclusive goldsmith in Berlin.5 Later air unit leaders presented goblets to their men - officers and enlisted alike - on the occasion of their first combat success. Thus in
1916 Boelcke presented an Ehrenbecher to Manfred
von Richthofen, who, in turn, bestowed similar
goblets to men who served under him.

thats interesting very interesting!

Just as I said MvR didn't use any kind of Symbol what your taking about is a personal marking. Now if that black 'n white ring on the nose shows up on there planes then I would have to say it was unit markings, as I know he didn't use anything kind of symbol like a crest or some kind of artwork that was repeated on any of his machines.

Hi MvR HU.

Killing two birds with one stone, so to speak...Here's a link to a picture of said Albatros D.II, which appears on the cover of Jim Miller's new book. It's a total 'must have' for anyone interested in MvR:

Hope this helps.
