Thanks Stephen! Yeah, you're correct, that's pretty darn accurate.

Just FWIW:

The only person I know who was acquainted with Udet is Capt. Eric Brown, RN(Ret), the world champeen carrier aviator. He studied German before the war and traveled in aviation circles as a youngster. "Winkle" says that Udet was one of the most memorable men he ever knew: outgoing, funny, and charming. He could whip out a cartoon or charicature with amazing speed.
In Sept. 1939, as a college student, Eric was back in Germany. One morning there was a knock on the door and he opened it to find two polite Gestapo minions. "Herr Brown," intoned one, "I am pleased to inform you that our nations are at war." He was escorted out of the country, and about 3 years later Winkle was splashing FW-200s in the North Atlantic.

Alan wrote: Zuckmeyer also based a play on Udet post WW2.

And this play was the basis for the b/w movie "Des Teufels General" with Curd Jürgens playing the role of Fliegergeneral Harras (Udet). Additionally to the Ritterkreuz Harras is wearing his PLM he received during WW1 as a fighter pilot. I don´t know if there is an English version existing.

In my opinion this movie is a pretty good one.

Stephen,

Thanks for sharing the Gen Oberst Udet image.

He is standing in front of one of the Curtiss Hawks that he was impressed with and had brought to Germany.

The remnants of the tubular metal fuselage and other bits still remain from this aircraft in Krakow.
