Question Life at an MvR airfield

Hey Everybody

I just like to ask
Does anybody know of any quotes that detail, the strict standards with which MvR kept his men. I've done some researching and i've found that MvR did not let his men, indulge their senses too often. I mean, life at the airfield was quite relaxed (or so i've read) but there is also evidence to suggest otherwise.
This includes a quote by Lothar Von Richthofen about how alcohol was not allowed at the airfield. Can anybody substantiate what i'm saying with a quote or two..?

Thanks

Dani

Mate,
Quite true - just need some time to grab a para or two to prove it.

If not a teetotaler, MvR was quite reserved with drink, to set an example, I suppose.

And also on the ground, after a mission, he was quite severe in his post-mission debriefs, as von der osten experienced.

i guess that is why ernst udet kept the cognac bottles in his plane... to keep it away from the airfield... there are plenty of pictures of men having alcohol in and around their quarters so maybe airfield is strictly at the aerodrome involving ground crews etc. there is plenty of evidence that the pilots were not at all abstinent...

MvR appears to have been a "sparse" drinker. His batman used the words, "doesn't drink" but since MvR's mother mentions Manfred having wine and champagne on occasions I can only assume that Manfred was not known to get drunk. Similar evidence seems to indicate that he smoked cigarettes only occasionally.

As far as the "dry" airfield goes; it would seem like a prudent practice although we know plenty of Jasta 11 pilots indulged off-duty. It seems that MvR forbid even the off-duty drink once Operation Micheal was underway.
