Thanks. I saw your note after I answered you.

I'm working with a Lieutenant's daughter. He wrote several times a week and she has his letters and a few photos.

Best, Douglas

Sounds like enough for a couple of books.

Check out some of the other Threads at the bottom of this page and you can contact Cigogne and Michael O'Niel for two that seem to know an awful lot about the 147th Aero Squadron.

Cheers, Jay

P.S. There is an excellent book, I believe that it is "AN ARIZONA AVIATOR", I would have to look. It is about an Aviator in the 147th.

Yes thilugfu, while this may be true, it still begs the answer as to whether Richthofen was flying his Red Tripe when Eddie Rickenbacker shot him down.
What do you think?

Manfred von Richthofen

Well, I believe Manfred von Richthofen died on April 21st shot by Canadian Captain Brown. The 25 year old Baron was in his Dreideckers I 425/17 Fokker (third series -- there were no #300s) tri-wing, which I understand the Australians ripped it apart. As to the color -- you'd have to ask them.

A Little banter

Doug -

That was a little "WW I Aeroplane Geek" banter - they were not serious about Rickenbacker and von R. Besides we know the Aussies story is all hooey - Snoopy shot him down and we have the stirring Charles Schultz cartoon recreations to prove it.

Jay - Thanks for hooking me up with Doug - hopefully I'll be abel to add something worthwhile to his project.

-Mike

147th

Well Mike, I figured it was something like that but you never know. Snoopy is my hero: "Und jetzt wir singen zusammen die Geschichte über den schweinköpfigen hund und den lieben Rot Baron..." (Actually, mine Deutsche is nicht ser gut, but I did used to teach in Frankfurt a quarter of a century ago...)

Best Regards, Douglas Westfall

Doug,

The 147th book FokkerJ was referring to is "An Arizona Aviator in France" about Ernest Love of the 147th. Currently in it's third edition (with an additional 40 pages of text and a number of new photos since the first edition), it is by Al Roesler, who also has a lot of information about the 147th.
