74 Squadron and the "4th Australian" Squadron
I am reading the unpublished memoirs of an American volunteer with 74 Squadron who was shot down and captured on June 12, 1918, (by Ltn. Josef Schafer of Jasta 16). He describes having to use a borrowed airplane on the fateful day he was shot down, because his plane had been damaged the night before by a member of the 4th Australian Squadron who landed on top of his SE5a. Here is his description,
"Because of the sporadic, but occasionally effective, moonlight bombing by the Germans, the planes at our airfield were parked along the hedge of a pasture at night, while we twenty or so pilots had been trundled off some distance away to sleep in an abandoned chateau. We shared our airfield with the 4th Australian Squadron, who flew Camels and did night interceptor work. While coming in from patrol the night before, one of the Aussies missed his mark and set his kite down on my SE5."
I know this is a long shot but if any one has any info on an Aussie pilot who cracked up his plane on a night landing during June 11th at the airfield at Clarmarais, I'd sure like to talk with you.
