That's exactly what I meant , but now I see I incorrectly converted this sound into an English syllable.

Indeed it should have been sh instead of ch ... as the latter sounds too strong in this case.

Nimm's mir bitte nicht übel, meine Englischkenntnisse sind inzwischen etwas eingerostet, leider! :d

Thanks so much for the education, gentlemen! Especially the family information, Thorsten.

Die gibt's glücklicherweise noch Das Meiste lernt man aber doch, indem man hier den Muttersprachlern zuhört, bzw. mal guckt, wie sie das alles erklären. Denn aus Wörterbüchern ergeben sich oft nur hölzerne Ausdrücke.

By the way, there was a General Wilhelm Graf von Gluszewski-Kwilecki (born 1867, died 1954) in the 5. Infanteriedivision (1), who was awarded the P le M on 24.11.1917. Does anyone know the nature of the relationship between Wilhelm and Heinz? Possibly father and son (I'm speculating here, nothing more)?

Greg
Hello Greg,

Heinz father wasn't promoted to the rank of Generalmajor before August 1939. He got a "Charakterisierung" as Generalmajor, some sort of honor-title, on the occasion of the 25 anniversary of the battle of Tannenberg. In 1917, when he was awarded the PlM, he was OTL (lieutenant colonel) and CO of Kgl. Preuß. Leib-Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 8.

Thanks, Immo. I knew that, I just didn't phrase my statement very well. I appreciate your clearing that up.

Hi Greg,

Great to see you looking at Jasta 4 again, sorry to hijack your thread a little but have you got anywhere with the second Fokker next to Udet's at Bernes airfield in August.

Identified Fokkers in the line up from left to right being...
Ltn Richard Kraut, Ltn Heinz Gluszewski-Kwilecki, Ltn Karl Meyer, Unknown, Unknown, Ltn Ernst Udet.

Photo of Gluszewski taken from Richthofen Film, Aufgenommen von A.H.G. Fokker.

plus one unidentified Jasta 4 pilot possibly Ltn Maushake ?

Possibly the same aircraft seen behind Udet at Epinoy on 21st August.

Kraut

Koepsch

thanks
Stu

Greg

Lolok was correct about "Gwushefski." In Polish, when the L is barred (like the bar on 7 in European writing) it is pronounced as an English W rather
than an L. Complicating matters, however, I doubt that Germans would
retain the Polish pronunciation of the barred L; Germans would probably
say "Glushefski." The "sz" is pronounced as "sh." Executioner 128 was
correct: Kwilecki is pronounced "Kvilets-ki," and his pronunciation of
Gluszewski is probably closer to how Germans would pronounce this name.

Regards

Josquin

Hi Greg,

I think the posts in the thread clarified the matter so good as possible.
If I discover my old microphones next weekend then I will try to send a sound file.
