Ltn. von Gluszewski - pronunciation?

Hi There,

I'm in need of help from some of our German friends, or at least someone who is a better German speaker than I am.

One of the more interesting pilots of JG I in 1918 was Ltn. Heinz Graf von Gluszewski-Kwilecki, generally known as von Gluszewski.

I have my own ideas, but I would like to know precisely how his last name should be properly pronounced.

He lived until 1980, and I wish I could have corresponded with this distinguished nobleman. Here he is with his splendid Fokker D.VII in October 1918:

Here is, apparently, his earlier OAW-built Fokker at Jasta 4. Note how the marking on the personal Wappen on the fuselage is reversed, compared to the other photo. Yes, that's Carlos Meyer Baldo's famous dog emblem on the D.VII in the background.



Any help on pronunciation would be very appreciated!!

Sorry I can't help you with this pronounciation, as my Deutsch is very limited.
Ltn. Heinz Graf von Gluszewski-Kwilecki.... Sounds Polish to me.

you should better ask a Polish fellow to help you - because the name is not at all a typical German but a Polish one. And I already broke my tongue, trying to pronounce the name

I think "Kwilecki" is not a problem for me but I see two different possible ways for pronounciation of "Gluszewski".
Furthermore sometimes Germans with Slavonic names prefer(ed) a bit different pronounciation which was easier for their German compatriots.
The best solution would be a Polish Forumitee sending a wav.file to you but
If nobody comes up with that then I could try my luck later.

Rammjaeger, I have a very good idea about Kwilecki, but I would still enjoy 'hearing' your input.

Thorsten, the family crest of the Kwilecki family is a treasure!! I had seen something similar in Puglisi's notes in the Ferko archives, but your image confirms that the Wappen on Gluszewski's Fokkers was red and white. I am extremely grateful.

Here's another example of his signature.

He was commissioned in the 3.Garde-Ulanen-Regiment, as were two of his comrades in JG I, Georg von der Osten and Viktor von Pressentin gennant von Rautter.

I know Polish pronounciation to some extent, so let's give it a try :

Gluszewski-Kwilecki

=

Gluzzevski - Kvilets-ki.

Names are pronounced differently in any other language, so that's also the case for German here.

German speakers tend to say ... Gluchewksi...

By the way, there was a General Wilhelm Graf von Gluszewski-Kwilecki (born 1867, died 1954) in the 5. Infanteriedivision (1), who was awarded the P le M on 24.11.1917. Does anyone know the nature of the relationship between Wilhelm and Heinz? Possibly father and son (I'm speculating here, nothing more)?

No, sorry. There are two possibilities: Glussewski (ss "stimmhaft" = voiced)

or Gluschewski ( sch in the german way. In english: Glushewski)
