Almost.

The buttons were not silver colored, and the shoulder boards were certainly different.

BTW, that is a funny photograph; it is not real. It has been painted over.

That is super George! Thank you so much!

Just for the record I've bought the Model Cellars' 1/6th scale MvR bust. It depicts the war-worn MvR in a greatcoat with the collar turned and obviously draws heavily on the famous Sankes. I want to render it as such but, of course, it will need a few modifications.

Wish me luck!

Curious

George;
I had gone to Deutschlands Armee in feldgrau Kreigs=und Friedens=Uniform. for the details of the uniform colors etc for the Ulanen uniform for Mvr's regiment. I don't want to get into an argument, I was wondering what source are you using in the colorations of MvR's uniform. The Sanke photo is not that clear. The ulanka in not the blouse worn by Aviation Troops.
Blue skies,
Dan-San

Dunkelblau Ulanka

Hello Dan-San,

Sanke # 450 (photo 1) was taken around 2 -3 February 1917, on the occasion of MvR having received PLM on January 12, 1917. Sanke #503 was taken at the same time, as well as photo #3. There is a very nice discussion about these Sanke cards on Lance Bronnekant book: The Imperial German Eagles in World War I: Their Postcards And Pictures, Vol 1. I recommend Vol II as well.

In these photos, especially #1, we see MvR wearing the formal dress, Dunkelblau (dark blue) Ulanka. We can clearly see the epaulettes with the Kaiser Alexander III monogram.

Blue skies, Dan-San

Feldgrau Ulanka

Dan-San,

In the field, MvR wore the feldgrau (field-grey) Ulanka, which of course was not an aviator’s uniform. The Ulanka was the uniform worn by the Ulans.

Regarding your question about my sources, these are excellent books Dan-San. I recommend them very much.

1. "Die feldgraue Uniformierung des deutschen Heeres 1907-1918", Band 1 und 2, by Jürgen Kraus, Verlag, 1999

and

2. “Die deutsche Armee im Ersten Weltkrieg-Uniformierung und Ausrüstung – 1914 bis 1918" by Jürgen Kraus, Verlag

Blue skies, Dan-San

George

Hi,

#3 was taken in May 1917 - as far as I can read the handwritten remark "V. 1917".

Thorsten,

One thing is the date when the studio session ocurred, and another is when the postcard was published. There was a timeline for that (see Lance's book)

Yet another thing is the date when someone signed the picture. J Jacobs could have signed many of his Sankes in the 60's wouldn't he?

#3 was hand signed by MvR on May 2, 1917.

However, the photo was taken in February along with #2 and #1.
