How amusing, they are obviously Austrians. : D
Hi Cliff,

It sold! US $49.50, one bid. Nice foto, but not as described.

I sent the following to the Seller a couple of days ago:

"Great foto!
Boelke died before this A-H Albatros D.III O.e.f.f.a.g. was built. These gentlemen are not German, they are in the uniforms of the Austro-Hungarian Militar K.U.K.
If you decide to offer these at a much more reasonable price Please let me know.
Unkown WWI Pilots just aren't worth as much as the well known Pilots that you mention.

Best Wishes, fokkerj"

He replied, but I am not going to print that, because these discussions can be a little uncomfortable for the Seller if they decide to follow the link that I provide them.

Then I replied:

"All of the Pilots in this fotograf are wearing uniforms of the Austro-Hungarian K.U.K., whether any are of German origin or not.... I can't tell. It is highly unlikely that any of these are noted German Aces wearing Austro-Hungarian uniforms, if so this indeed would be a very valuable image. The machine in the background appears to be an Albatros D.II Oeffag, Approximately twenty of these were built. The Germans built atleast 250 total Albatros D.I and D.II's which were flown by the likes of Boelcke and Richthofen.

"Boelcke died before this A-H Albatros D.III O.e.f.f.a.g. was built."
My mistake as this machine is a D.II and not a D.III!
It is probable that Boelcke was killed before this foto was taken, because the Austrian D.II Oeffags were built so late in this design's line and were soon replaced with the Oeffag version of the Albatros D.III, which were built and or in service 'til the end of the war.

I see that some "HAPPY CAMPER" bid on and won this image and hope that they are beyond satisfied.
Please let me know if you run the other one at a reasonable price as I do collect unkown Aviator fotos as well as some spendy known ones.

If you ever have any questions about WWI Aviators or WWI aviation in general, please feel free to ask.
If I am unable to help you, I do converse with the top Historians and Enthusiast in the World.
In fact the link that you should have recieved that I sent you, would set up a feeding frenzy among some of the most serious Collectors in the world if you had anything that you thought was truly valuable.

Best Wishes, Jay"

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Cheers, Jay

P.S. QUOTE: "Extremely rare vintage photo depicting WW I German aces. The one to the far left is Oswald Boelcke, middle one is Lothar von Ricthofen (Red Baron's brother). The others you might know whereas I am sure they are well known. There is writing on the back but I can't make it out. Image measures 4 1/4" x 3". Has some condition issues which can be seen in my photos. I would guess the photo to be taken in the early part of the war because Boelcke died in 1916. "

If any of you can find Hermann Goring amongst all of these famous german Aces, PLEASE let me know as I owe this Seller a rather Huge appology!

Here, maybe this will help:

Well I´m very curious about his answer.....

I´ve sent him a question if he could kindly send me a scan of the backside of this picture, but I didn´t get an answer.

.......maybe he was afraid of that I could read it!?

Greetings Raineranton,

I am sorry to tell you, but not even you with the assistance of twelve "Angry Boy Scouts" could get me to change my mind on this Seller's privacy!

OK,OK.... You are very persuasive and a little convincing, not to mention that I am ticklish!
How did you know? :unsure :

Tom does seem to be a nice guy and I believe that like most is doing his best with the limited information that most have on WWI.

Here is his first reply:

"You say they are Austro-Hungarian. Why would Hermann Goring be the second figure from the left? I have no question that is Goring and Goring was most certainly German. Comparing other pilots in the photo (that I identified) their likeness to the pilots I suggested is so strong I would be hard pressed to say other. You may possibly be right but possibly I may be. I am sure others looking will know. If indeed the plane is later than Boelke's life the photo could not be him.

Best,

Tom"

To which he replied:

"Hi Jay,

Thanks for the input. Knowledge is always appreciated. I try to be accurate but sometimes miscue.

Best,

Tom"

Thanks Jay,

So, Tom has not really an idea about Air War of World War 1 and the buyer have either also no idea about this theme, or he is really a specialist for Austro-Hungarian flyers!
