James,

according to Kofl 6 report Uffz. Nichte was wounded by groundfire that day.

Canadian from Memphis who was WIA?

May I throw in a question into this thread? Since you are talking about the 209 Squadron and communiques, I am looking for an answer to something that has puzzled me over the years.

I read in a book about the last dogfight of MVR and Brown & May, and it said that there was one airman wounded that day. He was a member of the 209 Squadron and it said he was from Memphis. I had the name but I forgot it.

Q: Who was this airman who flew for 209 Sq and was wounded on 21 April 1918?
Q: Was this airman an American or Canadian?
Q: Was he born in Memphis; lived in Memphis; or ??

The pilot was Lt William John MacKenzie (later awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Belgian Croix de Guerre). The information I have says he was born on 9 January 1894 and his home was listed as Port Robinson, Ontario, where he was employed as a draughtsman.

I have nothing on his life post-war, so I suppose it's possible he at some time went to Memphis.

Graeme,

Lt. MacKenzie. That was the name. I assumed the reference meant he was from Memphis---I never considered that was his home after the war.

I have a membership to Footnote genealogy website. So I searched for a "William MacKenzie" in Tennessee Census of 1930. I thought I had found him when the name turned up with an approx birth year of 1893. Turned out, it said he was born in Tennessee. Also searched for "McKenzie" and got more hits but none with that birth-year.
I may keep searching for that name in Tennessee.
